My Dad – ‘The Rare Eastern Bilby’

Dads; fathers, pops, a son’s first hero, a daughter’s first love… or in my case ‘The Rare Eastern Bilby’.

We started calling my dad (Bill) ‘The Rare Eastern Bilby’ back in the 90’s when I was working on an amazing TV Show called ‘Animal Hospital’ on Channel 9.

I was lucky enough to be sent to the Northern Territory to film a story on you guessed it… ‘The Rare Eastern Bilby’.

My dad’s name is Bill, short for William and for some strange reason the nickname stuck.

It was during this time Australian Chocolate manufacturers tried to convince us all to buy and gift chocolate bilbys rather than chocolate Easter Eggs to help support the dwindling bilby population.

True marketing genius… however the chocolate Bilby fad didn’t stick, but dad’s nickname did!

‘The Rare Eastern Bilby’ (my dad) is a very rare specimen indeed… cut from country cloth, with a will of steel, this man can turn his hand to just about anything and create magic.

He’s currently renovating a Heron Sailing boat to teach his 5 grandbabies how to sail.

He will drop anything at a call from one of his three children to fix, help, paint, glue garden, move, build just about anything … (I still haven’t thanked you for gluing those shoes and dropping them off dad!).

To say my dad is special to us would be a ginormous understatement.

He’s my hero, and one part of the reason I am who I am today.
